Going Dutch: A Crash Course in Understanding The Dutch
The ideal farewell gift — or better yet, a welcome gift — for international students and expats. For years, The Fearless Cartooneer has portrayed the Dutch at their strangest, most annoying, most extraordinary, but above all, funniest, in his monthly cartoon Going Dutch.
What started as a crash course in Dutch quirks has, once bundled, become a brilliant (and never boring) introduction to Dutch culture.
Dutch people pride themselves on being so normal. They even have a saying that calls other Dutch who colour outside the lines to order: just act normal, that’s crazy enough. When Ricky van Duuren proposed to capture the Dutch idiosyncracies in a cartoonish matter in 2008, eyebrows were raised. Everybody thought the venture would fail? Everybody? No, one man knew better. And that was Ricky himself, The Fearless Cartooneer. For twelve years in a row he dipped his quill pen in ironic ink and painted the Dutch as they never see themselves: simply extraordinary.
