Claire’s first date in Groningen turns out to be a sketchy affair

A chance encounter, a coffee, a walk through the city: Claire’s first date in Groningen starts out great, but ends disastrous.

The fourth episode of Claire Moreau Moves Abroad follows Claire after she unexpectedly reconnects with a cyclist who nearly knocked her over earlier that day. What begins as an awkward apology quickly develops into a spontaneous date through Groningen.

In Exploring the City, Claire explores parts of the city she has not yet seen, learns about local student superstitions and spends the day getting to know someone outside her usual circle of friends. During her first date in Groningen, the two share stories, jokes and increasingly obvious flirting, while the ever-present camera crew struggles to stay out of the way.

The episode initially plays like a classic romantic comedy, but gradually takes a different turn. As the evening progresses, Claire is forced to navigate a situation familiar to many students: how do you handle mismatched expectations when one person wants more than the other?

Created by first-year International Communication student Alec Salomon, Claire Moreau Moves Abroad follows a French student during her first months in Groningen while a film crew documents her experiences for a fictional Hanze campaign. Throughout the series, Claire faces the challenges of international student life, from finding housing and employment to friendships, relationships and building a new life far from home.

New episodes of Claire Moreau Moves Abroad appear weekly on YouTube until 1 July.
