Weng Fong Mou (22) and Kuan Chak Vong (21), Macau, China

Weng: ‘I love watching movies, especially European. That’s why I always longed to be in Europe. I study Communication at the University of Macau. Kuan and I have come here to do an exchange programme in Medialism, focusing on video and audio.

‘The Netherlands seems to be a good country to live. People are extremely friendly, the public transport system is good and I like the bikes everywhere.’

I hear I should spend more money on the bicycle lock than on the bike, because they get stolen a lot

Kuan: ‘When we arrived, we had to wait very long for a bus, though, fifteen minutes in the freezing cold. In Macau buses run at least every five minutes.
‘I hear I should spend more money on the bicycle lock than on the bike, because they get stolen a lot. Is that true?

‘We had to get used to the limited opening hours of shops. Macao is very busy. Shops open 24 hours a day. Many international companies. People from all over China work in Macau, but they don’t live there because it’s so expensive. We used to be a colony of Portugal, but most Macanese do not speak Portuguese as in the old days, only Cantonese.’
